NZ 318-4

Some brief and not possibly incoherent thoughts from a night when the eyelids got very heavy…

You can be critical of Gary Stead’s insistence on turning Will Young into an opener - lord knows I have - but that 47 at the top of the innings was more than a minor classic, it was a thing of genuine beauty.

Young hit the ball on top of the bounce, he punched through point, drove through cover and mid-off, flicked square on the on-side and pulled through midwicket. He looked beautifully balanced and in control… then he nicked off to a jaffa from Ben Stokes.

I’m going to resist the temptation to offer this as evidence for or against him playing at the top of the order and instead just remind you that Young has enviable talent.

The guy can play.
