NZ 553 & 224-7
ENGLAND 539
When confronted by sight of tailenders bating under duress late on day four and the possibility of defeat after posting 553 on the first innings, the obvious take is that it’s more evidence of the decline and impending fall of the Black Caps’ empire.
While there have been signs of that going back to Mt Maunganui in the New Year, it would be unkind to include the events of Trent Bridge in any dossier of decrepitude.
If anything, the approach to the second innings was of a team with too much confidence in itself, rather than lacking in it.
