Olympique Daily: The finishing kick
Blizzard of medals define last two days - and more could/ should be on the way ($)
You know how I said I couldn’t chart a path to 20 medals, the target to reach lest New Zealand regresses on the medal count for the first time since the infamous four-medal return of the Sydney Olympics?
Well, quite a bit has happened since then and nearly all of it has been good — excellent in fact.
Five medals in two days, three of them of the sparkliest kind, with the tantalising prospect of more. The Los Angeles (11), Seoul and London (13) campaigns have been overtaken, just Rio and Tokyo remain.
Venue: Total (Gold-Silver-Bronze)
Rio de Janeiro: 18 (4-9-5)
Tokyo: 20 (7-6-7)
Paris: 15 (6-7-2)
There IS a path. It’s got potholes and is lined on both sides by nettles, but it’s still a path.
