This has been the flattest, most meandering summer of cricket in recent memory so the first test against South Africa should give the men’s game the shot of adrenaline it needs.
Coming after the joy of last winter’s England tour and World Test Championship victory, and an unlikely march to the final of the World T20, this has been a bummer of a summer.
The Super Smash was okay but it has struggled for traction for reasons mentioned here, and the Ford Trophy has been a literal wash out. Central Districts lead the men’s table having had more games abandoned - four - than the three they have played.
