There is a lot going on in this story, which quotes a Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron stalwart as saying hosting races in Saudi Arabia is like Nazi Germany’s hosting of the 1936 Olympics. 

Presumably Hamish Ross was referring to the grotesque suppression of human rights rather than the expectation the armies of the House of Saud will invade Poland in three years’ time, but regardless, the analogy is weighty.

Jim Farmer KC compared it to the All Blacks’ continued association with the Springboks during Apartheid, which might be more appropriate.

The story contains a couple of interesting quotes, one from a blog post and one historic.

“There is no quantity of silver that can justify the selection of Jeddah,” Ross said in an allegorical blog post linking Grant Dalton to a certain biblical figure.
