I love the Olympics - just a constant mix of unfamiliar sports to learn about! Nice to have other sports that hog winters attention to be on the back-burner.
The second Belgian goal was one of the most insane pieces of skill I've ever seen. To trap the ball mid air on the reverse stick side, hit it while it's still in the air and again reverse it into the bottom corner with the narrowest of gaps past the goalie's pads, I don't think there's words to describe how incredible that was. Don't think I've ever seen a better goal in any sports involving a ball and a target. Not much luck went our way, we looked a really well-coached, skillful outfit.
Any comment on how a 28 yr old Australian gymnast who had never represented NZ before appears at the Olympics ...because she has a NZ born Mum. Is this a fair go to the dozens of NZ Sports people who narrowly miss selection cos they an inch short of the very strict criteria ? You correct that Swimming gets overhyped by NZ press re medal chances !
Your swimming commentary really resonates Dylan. Has been a pet peeve of mine for some time, I can’t think of a more overhyped section of the NZ sporting landscape than swimming. For years we’ve been told how they’re going to do this and that but never have. I note with interest your point about swimming being dominated by Oz and the US and medals being supposedly hard to win because of it. I think your stats bust the myth and I’d add a couple of extra thoughts: 1 if you want to be the best you have to beat the best, that’s true in all sports and 2. Not sure if the current funding model but Sport NZ or whatever it’s called now used to allocate funds to sports based on a $$ per medal basis, if swimming is so hard to win a medal in then they shouldn’t get any money!!
Not to mention the first Belgian goal was off another terrible PC call, and the first Indian goal came after Dixons kicker came loose in the lead up and then the ball got caught under there. They have played some cracking hockey, and to have nothing to show for it must sting- quite cruel really. Great work as always Dylan
That Warriors record is truly remarkable. Shows the value of a successful season the year before, both on and off the pitch. It has become the place to be, for both corporate and regular attendees.
